Wrestling: Delphi ends HCC Reign at Lafayette Sectional

LAFAYETTE – Since 2003 the year the Lafayette Sectional expanded from a four-team format to its current 10-team format Tippecanoe County’s three Hoosier Crossroads Conference schools: Harrison, Lafayette Jefferson, and McCutcheon have captured all five Lafayette Sectionals.

However, that all changed on Saturday January 26th as Delphi (from the Hoosier Conference) won its first wrestling sectional since 1994 defeating runner-up Harrison by 45 points (280-245) at Lafayette Jeff’s Crawley Center.  McCutheon was third with 196 points and Lafayette Jeff finished fourth with 190 points.

HCC Coordinator Eric Eaton was on hand for the finals of the sectional, click here to watch video highlihgts from some of the championship bouts.  Featured for Harrison are Ezra Penn (103 lbs.), Shane Evers (140 lbs.), and Josh Thomack (215 lbs.).  Sean McCann the champion at 189 lbs. is featured for Lafayette Jeff and Wesley Everett at 285 lbs. is highlighted for Delphi.  In addtion, Oracle head coach Mike Atwood talks about the victory by his team.

Delphi which competes in 2A in football, took down the three 5A football HCC schools by placing wrestlers in 9 of 14 championship bouts.  The Oracles won sectional championships in five of the nine weight classes in which they had finalists.

Harrison had six individual champions; but they only had one runner-up finish compared to Delphi’s four.

“Every since we came to this sectional we’ve always been the little school,” said Delphi coach Mike Atwood.  “We just came out and went hard. We’ve told our kids all year, if you go hard good things will happen, today it did.”

Boys Basketball: 4A #7 Lafayette Jeff Crushes Harrison

By Paul Brown
Contributing Writer

WEST LAFAYETTE – The Lafayette Jefferson Bronchos allowed only 11 points over the final 3 quarters of a Hoosier Crossroads Conference rivalry game, handing the Harrison Raiders a lopsided 81-30 loss on January 18th.

The 51-point difference represents Lafayette Jeff’s largest margin of victory since a 55-point victory on  January 12, 2000.

The problems started early for the Raiders, when senior Ryan Powell left the game with a leg injury early in the first quarter.  He had returned to the Harrison bench on crutches by the end of the game.

The first quarter looked promising offensively for Harrison as they managed to score 19 points.  Their offense soon stalled, however, as they managed only 5 points in each of the second and third quarters and only 1 point in the final quarter.

Junior Levi Armstrong led Harrison (2-11, 0-6 HCC) with 11 points, all of which were scored in the first quarter of play.

The Bronchos, on the other hand, started well with 31 first-quarter points and continued their scoring to finish with 81 points.  They shot 44 percent from 2-point range and 37 percent from 3 point range for the game.

The Bronchos (13-1, 5-0 HCC) were led in scoring by junior Brandon Williams’ 24 points and sophomore Jesse Berry’s 23.  Senior Broderick Lewis led Lafayette Jeff’s dominant rebounding with 13 total rebounds.  The Bronchos grabbed 59 total rebounds compared to Harrison’s 25.

The Bronchos brought in their subs to play most of the fourth quarter, as their 20-point halftime lead turned into a 40-point lead after 3 quarters.

The cross-county rivalry game was physical from start to finish, with a total of 30 combined fouls.  Harrison was simply unable to keep up with Lafayette Jeff’s rapid style of play for much more than the first quarter.

Boys Swimming: Hamilton Southeastern Cruises to Title at HCC Meet

By Eric Eaton
HCC Coordinator

Fishers – Top-ranked Hamilton Southeastern bounced back in fine fashion from a dual meet loss to #2 North Central (Indianapolis) on Jan. 10 to capture the 2008 Hoosier Crossroads Conference Swimming and Diving Championships held January 12th at the Hamilton Southeastern pool.

The champion Royals tallied 488 points.  Zionsville finished second with a score of 308.50, and Fishers came home third with 240 points.

Hamilton Southeastern recorded eight victories in the win.  New conference records were established in six of those wins.  In fact, Hamilton Southeastern’s boys team duplicated the feat of its girls team by setting new meet records in all three relays.

A pair of Royal swimmers set new conference marks in individual events.

Senior Austin Mudd established new conference records in both the 200 yard I.M. and the 100 yard backstroke.  He also was a member of two relay teams which set new meet records.

Derek Paul was the second Hamilton Southeastern swimmer to win an individual event with a new conference record.  The senior won the 100 yard breaststroke in a time of 59.11, eclipsing the previous conference mark by just over two-tenths of a second.

Southeastern coach Andy Pedersen had this team say about all the new conference marks established by his swimmers.

“I think it’s just the pride they have in our conference,” said Pedersen.  Last year this was the best swimming conference in the state.  We beat the MIC at the state meet, and we take a lot of pride in that.  And I think they take a lot of pride in that record board; and I
just think they were ready to go today.”

Two other swimmers set new conference records in individual events at the meet.

Westfield senior Ben Wachtel established new meet records in both the 200 and 100 yard freestyles.  The Purdue signee won the 200 free in a time of 1:42.74.  He then later swam a time of 46.83 to win the 100 free.  Oh by the way, it was his own record he broke in both events.

Lafayette Jefferson’s Ben Russell broke a six-year-old conference record in the 500 yard freestyle.  The senior swam a time of 4:41.31, shattering the previous record by over five seconds.

The Zionsville Eagles recorded 18 Top ten finishes at the meet to out-distance Fishers for third place.

“It was really good and a little surprising to be honest with you,” said Zionsville coach Scott Kubly on his team’s performance.  “We’ve had quite a few meets here in the last seven days, and are times just keep getting slower and slower.  And today we just kind of breakout and have the best meet of the season.  It was incredible; the kids did a fantastic job on both sides, and I’m proud of them.”

The teams finishing in the fourth, fifth, and sixth spots were separated by a total of four points.  Tenth-ranked Westfield grabbed fourth place with a score of 209.50.  Noblesville was fifth with a score of 205.50.  The Millers beat sixth place Brownsburg by a mere half a point.

Click here to watch all of our video coverage from the meet.  Featured in the video highlights are Mudd in the 100 yard backstroke and Wachtel in the 100 yard freestyle.  In addition, both swimmers talk about their outstanding individual performances during the meet.  There is also an audio clip from Pederson on the Royals’ success at the conference meet.

Girls Swimming: Hamilton Southeastern Dominates Field at HCC Meet

By Eric Eaton
HCC Coordinator

Fishers – Second-ranked Hamilton Southeastern won 9 of 12 events at the 2008 Hoosier Crossroads Conference Swimming and Diving Championships to easily out-distance runner-up Zionsville 519 to 296 on January 12th.

The host Royals set six new conference records in the win.  In fact, they won all three relays in record time.  The team of Maegan O’Conner, Christina Jacobs, Lindsay Rogers, and Carly Mercer set a new Hamilton Southeastern pool record in the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 1:46.27.

Southeastern’s three individual conference records were set by senior Lindsay Rogers and sophomore Carly Mercer.  Rogers, who will swim in this year’s Olympic Trials, set new conference marks in both the 200 yard I.M. and the 100 yard breaststroke.  She also was on two of the relay teams that broke conference records.

Mercer claimed her new conference record in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 23.70.  And like Rogers, she also was a part of two conference record relay teams.  In addition, her winning time of 51.72, while not a new conference record, was over two seconds faster than that of teammate Erin Kelley who finished second.

Hamilton Southeastern coach Andy Pedersen had this team say about all the new conference marks established by his swimmers.

“I think it’s just the pride they have in our conference,” said Pedersen.  Last year this was the best swimming conference in the state.  We beat the MIC at the state meet, and we take a lot of pride in that.  And I think they take a lot of pride in that record board; and I
just think they were ready to go today.”

Harrison senior Jenny Connolly, who just happened to be celebrating her 18th birthday on Jan. 12, joined Hamilton Southeastern’s Rogers and Mercer as double individual event winners.

Connolly, who will also compete at the Olympic Trials, had an amazing day.  In fact, she set new conference and pool records in both the 100 yard butterfly and the 100 yard backstroke.  She won the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 55.63.  Then, she came back later in the meet and captured the 100 yard backstroke with a time 55.11.  She also broke her own school record in both events, which she had established prior at last year’s state meet.

The Zionsville Eagles recorded 20 Top 10 finishes at the meet to finish second, 49 points ahead of third place Lafayette Jeff.

Sophomore Alex Brennan (200 yard freestyle: 1:57.56) and Sophomore Katie Newcomer (100 yard backstroke 1:00.46) each set new Zionsville school records at the meet.

Click here to watch all of our video coverage from the meet.  Included in the video highlights are: Connolly in the 100 yard backstroke, Rogers in the 200 yard I.M., and Westfield’s Jeanee Coy who came from behind to win the 200 yard freestyle. In addition, there are also interviews available within the highlights from Connolly, Rogers, and Pedersen.  There are two audio clips from Rogers: one on her team’s performance at the HCC meet, and a second about competing in the 2008 United States Olympic Trials with Connolly and Center Grove swimmers Michelle Mckeehan and Allie Day.

Girls Basketball: Lafayette Jeff Defeats Harrison 88-63

By Eric Eaton
HCC Coordinator

WEST LAFAYETTE – January 12th’s Hoosier Crossroads Conference battle between host Harrison and Lafayette Jefferson featured an intriguing coaching match-up.

You see Jeff’s Jan Conner and Harrison’s Christy Flowers are very close friends.  In fact, Flowers is both a former player and assistant of Conner’s.  Flowers, who is a first-year head coach, played two seasons for Conner at Benton Central and then was Conner’s assistant last season at Lafayette Jeff.

This season though has been a difficult one for Flowers and the Raiders.  They entered the game against county rival Lafayette Jeff on a 14-game losing streak.

Conner’s Bronchos gave the Raiders no slack either.  They jumped out to a 24-12 first-quarter lead and then survived a brief Harrison surge in the 4th, to win by a final score of 88-63.

Lafayette Jeff was led by a pair of 24 point scorers in Brandi Richardson and Lacey Roberts.  The two combined to hit 21 free throws in the win over the Raiders.

“Tonight Brandi was in another world,” said Conner.  “I mean not just shooting wise, but in passing wise and seeing the floor and seeing the whole floor.  I mean she was just absolutely unbelievable.”

“What a game for Lacy,” said Conner.  “The points are great; but what I saw was diving on the floor, tying people up.  This is a senior who says I’ve got three more weeks, I’m going to make the best of those three weeks.”

Jeff freshman Breanna Calloway scored a career high 13 points in the win.  The majority of her baskets were the result of spectacular passes from the sophomore point-guard Richardson.

Harrison, which got a team-high 18 points from senior Kristen Martin, cut a 25 point deficit down to 17 with about three minutes remaining.  However, the Bronchos made 10 out of 15 fourth–quarter free throws to close out the Raiders.

Lafayette Jeff, which improved to 8-8 (5-2 HCC), will take on yet another county rival in 3A West Lafayette in its next ballgame on January 15.

Harrison (1-15, 0-6 HCC) will try to snap a 15-game losing streak when they travel to 1A Clinton Prairie (2-12) on January 17th.

W Mater Dei Inv.: #2 Wildcats best defending KY state champ Union Co.

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

In
a battle of defending state champions Dec. 28-29, Indiana’s
second-ranked host Evansville Mater Dei totaled 219 points to capture
its own 17-team invitational by downing Kentucky’s Union County (172).

Eighth-ranked
Avon took third with 162 points, while Evansville Memorial (151.5)
placed fourth and No. 19 Franklin (140) was fifth. No. 16 Floyd Central
finished a disappointing ninth with 101 points, trailing Kentucky’s
Trinity (136), Harrison (West Lafayette) (128), and New Albany (112.5).

Mater
Dei, which has won 12 Indiana team championships, finished the two-day
event with four champions, four third-place results, and two fourths.
That was enough to surpass Union County, which ended with three champs,
a second, a third, and a fourth.

Taking titles for Mater Dei
were John Sims, a 2-0 upset winner over Avon’s No. 20 Kyle Estrada at
125; Drew Lappe, who pinned Jeremiah Faulkenburg of Floyd Central in
1:48 at 140; No. 2 Jacob Schneider, a 9-3 winner over No. 11 Trygve
Henrikson of Greensburg at 189; and heavyweight Brad Niemeier, a 5-4
upset victor over No. 9 Eric MacDonald of Harrison (West Lafayette).

The
Wildcats’ third-place finishers were Craig Nelson (119), Adam
Weinzapfel (135), Josh Erkman (145), and No. 20 John Kercher (215).
Nolan King took fourth at 152, falling 9-4 to Evansville Memorial’s
Kyle Sandwith, while Quinn Schroeder narrowly missed an upset for third
at 103 in a 2-1 loss to Avon’s 10th-ranked Blaine Hall.

Avon,
meanwhile, had three runners-up, a third, and three fourths. The trio
of Orioles’ second-place finishers was No. 19 Scott Meunier, a 7-3
finals loser to Evansville Memorial’s No. 4 Conner Zuber in perhaps the
day’s best match at 130; Isaiah Alfs, a 15-6 victim of Harrison’s
Cameron Viahos at 152; and Estrada at 125.

Unranked Evansville
Memorial had to be the surprise of the tournament as the Tigers
finished with one champ, a second, two thirds, and two fourths. Zuber
got the win at 130 over Avon’s Meunier, while No. 3 Tanner Wedding fell
2-1 in the 160 finals to defending Kentucky 152-pound state champion
