Broncho Hokum Karrum at Lafayette Jeff – West Lafayette won the meet which featured two-member team relays with 14 points. Lafayette Jeff was the the top HCC finisher with 32 points and Brownsburg finished fifth with 42 points.

In 2007 Zionsville’s boys tennis team enjoyed an outstanding season on the court, winning conference, sectional, regional, and semistate crowns.
In fact, the Eagles suffered only two non-invitational losses all season, and both were to eventual state champion North Central (Indianapolis). The second of those losses came in the state semifinals, where they were defeated by the Panthers by a score of 4-1.
The 2008 season though brings about some major changes for the Eagles.
For starters, Matt Walter is no longer the team’s coach. He stepped down in the off-season to concentrate on an assistant principal’s job, and was replaced by Dan Layton.
Secondly, Zionsville graduated its #1 doubles team of Marshall Brown and Peter Gunderman. That tandem won the 2007 HCC tournament at #1 doubles and will surely be missed.
However, don’t dismiss the Eagles chances of having another stellar season in 2008. You see they return two of their top singles players from 2007 in Andrew Kahn, and Joe Hammond, as well as their #2 doubles team from last year in J.P. Dwyer and Nick Laconi.
And listen to this, none of the aforementioned individuals finished lower than third at the 2007 conference tournament. In fact, conference championships were won by Kahn at #2 singles and by Dwyer & Laconi at #2 doubles.
Fishers and Hamilton Southeastern though both figure to give the Eagles a strong challenge at this year’s tournament. Both schools finished in the top-4 at last year’s tourney and each welcomes back several all-conference performers from last season.
On the individual front, new conference champions will be crowned at both #1 singles and #1 doubles in 2008.
You already know about the departure of the #1 doubles championship team of Brown and Gunderman from Zionsville who both graduated.
But did you know that Gordon Hayward of Brownsburg won the conference title at #1 singles last year, before he hit that infamous buzzer-beater at the basketball state finals which lifted the Bulldogs to the 4A state championship?
Well he in fact did, and he also graduated, meaning there will be a new HCC champion to be determined at #1 singles when the conference tourney commences on September 20 at Brownsburg.
In other coaching news, Tim Samons has been hired as the new coach at Noblesville. He’s not new to Noblesville tennis though, he was already the head of the girls team there.
And at Brownsburg, Karen Starkey, who like Samons was already the girls coach, takes over the head duties of the boys program as well.

In 2007, the Fishers boys cross country team had a truly remarkable campaign for a program that was only in its second year of existence.
Not only did the Tigers capture the Hoosier Crossroads Conference title with a 37-point romp over runner-up McCutcheon; but they went on to win the school’s first ever state championship in any sport with a 10-point victory over LaPorte at the state finals in Terre Haute.
In 2008, Fishers returns four of its seven runners that competed in last year’s cross country state meet.
However, Rob Seymour, who coached the team to its magical run a year ago, is not returning. Seymour stepped down as head coach of both the boys and girls cross country programs at Fishers during the off-season.
Nathan Warnecke, an assistant with the team last season, replaces Seymour as head coach of the boys team, as the Tigers eye a repeat of both conference and state titles.
Warnecke has got a superstar in senior Drew Shields to work with too.
Last year as a junior, Shields finished fifth at the state cross country meet and then had a breakout track season which saw him win state titles in both the 800 and 1600 meter runs.
Those achievements alone should make Shields a prohibitive favorite to capture this year’s individual conference crown.
However, Zionsville senior Dylan Sorenson, the reigning conference champion, should not be counted out. Last year Sorenson posted a winning time of 15:37 at the conference meet, which was ten seconds better than Shields, who finished third.
Speaking of the conference meet, the 2008 edition is scheduled for Saturday, October 4 at the White River Elementary School in Noblesville.
And if you’re looking for a couple of teams who could possibly unseat Fishers as a two-time defending conference champion, you might take a look at both McCutcheon and Noblesville.
Both schools participated in last year’s state meet, and each returns significant experience.
McCutcheon returns five of its top seven runners from last season, and Noblesville returns four.
Three of Noblesville’s runners have significant state finals track experience as well, having been members of the school’s state championship 4×800 meter relay team last spring.
A dark horse contender to win this year’s conference title might be Westfield. The Shamrocks return six varsity runners from a team that finished fourth at the conference meet last season.

Hoosier Crossroads Content Coordinator
The conclusion to the 2007 season brought about some really encouraging signs for head coach Jeromy Flowers and the Harrison Raiders.
Not only did they knock off Hoosier Crossroads conference co-champion Hamilton Southeastern in week 8 by a score of 28-25, but they also finished by winning 3 of their final 5 games.
Now granted the Raiders graduated 15 starters from that team. However, when you look at the fact that four of Harrison’s 8 losses last season were by seven points or less, it seems apparent that coach Flowers has this program moving in the right direction as he begins his third season as head coach.
If the Raiders are to continue their momentum by registering their first winning season since 1996, then junior running back Bowdie Linsenmeyer will most certainly play a huge role in doing so.
The 5’10” Linsenmeyer, who was honorable mention All-State last year, set the single season school rushing record last season with 1,565 yards. In addition, he also set single game school marks for both touchdowns (5) and points (30).

Hoosier Crossroads Conference Content Coordinator
To nobody’s surprise, Westfield won both conference and state titles last season in convincing fashion. For coach Scott Lidskin’s Shamrocks, it was their third consecutive state title.
Now, Westfield did lose two outstanding runners to graduation in Maggie Bingham (4th at state meet in ’07) and Breanne Ehrman (40th at state meet ’07).
Then, during the week of August 10, the Shamrocks learned that super sophomore Waverly Neer would be transferring to Culver Academies.
However, coach Lidskin has built a monster of program at Westfield which includes lots and lots of depth. Thus, the Shamrocks still must be considered the favorite to win the Hoosier Crossroads Conference title in 2008.
But Noblesville, which finished second at last year’s conference meet, returns five of its top seven runners. Therefore, the Millers quite possibly could be a team that finds a way to pull off an upset of Westfield at this year’s conference meet.
On the individual front, the Hoosier Crossroads Conference will crown a new champion in 2008. Last year’s individual champion, Lorna Whaley of Avon, graduated and is now running collegiately at Louisville.
The two likely candidates to succeed Whaley as the conference’s individual champion were to have both been from Westfield.
However, Neer, who finished 23rd at last year’s state cross country meet, has transferred.
Therefore, Shamrock senior Kaitlyn Love has to be considered the favorite to win the 2008 individual title.
As a junior, Love finished runner-up to Whaley at the conference meet, and then went on to record an eighth place finish at the state meet.
In coaching news, there was one coaching change that took place in the conference during the off-season. It happened at Fishers, where Rob Seymour stepped down as head coach of both the boys and girls teams. Beth Jahns was then hired to succeed Seymour as the girls cross country coach of the Tigers.

Hoosier Crossroads Conference Content Coordinator
The Hoosier Crossroads Conference has been and likely will continue to be one of the best conference’s in the state for boys soccer.
This was never more evident than last season when six conference schools obtained a top-20 ranking during week five of the 2007 season. In addition, six schools went on to claim sectional titles.
Brownsburg captured the conference crown last season with a record of 7-0-2, but graduated their top six goal scorers in addition to their assists leader and goal keeper. Thus when the 2008 season begins on August 18, the race to determine this year’s conference champion appears to be wide open.
In coaching news, there were two coaching changes that occurred in the off-season. Jason Klingerman takes over for Pete Kapsalis at Fishers, and at Harrison Chris Castro replaces Ron Brown.

2008 Conference Overview
“The HCC is obviously one of the most competitive conferences in the state. Many players have been able to benefit from good coaching at some of Indiana’s top club teams in the area. Two or three teams from our conference are likely state contenders such as Noblesville and Zionsville. It’s hard to say which team will go the distance, but I’ll predict Zionsville.” – Fishers coach Jason Klingerman
“I strongly believe the HCC is the strongest conference top to bottom in the state. The conference is littered with exceptional talent. The annual classic battles between us (Westfield) and teams like Zionsville, Noblesville, Brownsburg, and Avon are sure to be bigger and better with this class of players and coaches.
