W: HCC teams face tough road in state tournament

The State Wrestling tournament gets underway with sectionals at 32 sites on Saturday, January 31st. For those not familiar with the format, it can be a little confusing. Individual wrestlers advance from the sectionals and continue on through individual regionals and semi-states on their road to Indianapolis for the finals. Only the team winner at the sectional level advances in the team tournament. They will advance to one of four eight team regionals and then on to an eight team final the week after the individual state finals.

Here is a look at the path for the Hoosier Crossroads Conference teams.

LAFAYETTE JEFFERSON SECTIONAL —Lafayette Jeff, Harrison, McCutcheon — Winner will face the winner at Twin Lakes in the Peru regional.

ZIONSVILLE SECTIONAL — Zionsville, Fishers, Westfield, Hamilton Southeastern — Winner will face the winner at Crawfordsville in the North Montgomery regional

HAMILTON HEIGHTS SECTIONAL — Noblesville — Winner will face winner at Lawrence Central in the North Montgomery regional

AVON SECTIONAL — Avon, Brownsburg — Winner will face winner at Decatur Central in the Greencastle regional.

The draw marks an especially difficult road for the cluster of HCC teams in the Zionsville sectional. They must first jump the hurdle of a tough Carmel squad in the sectional. If one of them passes that test, they will then feed into a difficult regional at North Montgomery where the likes of Lawrence North, Cathedral, and Southmont could await.
