Girls Swimming & Diving: HCC Preview

By Eric Eaton
Hoosier Crossroads Conference Content Coordinator

At the 2008 Hoosier Crossroads Conference girls swimming & diving meet Hamilton Southeastern outclassed the field, taking the top spot by an astounding 223 points over runner-up Zionsville.

The Royals then parlayed their exceptional performance at the conference meet into a strong state meet performance as well, were they finished second to Carmel, who has won 22 consecutive state championships in girls swimming & diving.

HSE, which fell to Carmel 387 to 317.5 at last year’s state meet, did however record the highest number of points ever for a runner-up finisher.

However, the Royals lost 12 swimmers to graduation from team, including Lindsay Rogers, who competed in last summer’s Olympic Swim Trials.

Therefore, as the 2008-09 season gets underway, the rest of the conference should at least have a glimmer of hope that they can compete with Southeastern at the 2009 conference meet which is scheduled to take place on Saturday, January 10 at 9:00 A.M. from Noblesville High School.

Zionsville, which lost none of its top swimmers to graduation last year, has perhaps the best shot at knocking of the Royals at his year’s conference meet.

In fact, Zionsville returns at least one swimmer in 7 out of the 9 individual events who recorded a top 8 finish at last season’s conference meet.

Individually, the conference graduated two outstanding swimmers in Harrison’s Jenny Connolly and Hamilton Southeastern’s Rogers last season. Connolly left Harrison as one of the state’s most decorated butterfly and backstroke swimmers, claiming a combined five state championships in those events during her final three seasons. Meanwhile, Rogers was a part of five state championship relay teams during her four years at HSE.

But despite the fact that both Connolly and Rogers have moved on to collegiate swimming, expect the conference to still fare quite well at the 2009 state meet from an individual perspective. In fact, here are a few swimmers and divers from the conference that should make some noise at the state meet this season.

Carly Mercer (Hamilton Southeastern), Jr. – Won the 100 yard freestyle state championship and finished third in the 50 yard freestyle at the 2008 state meet. She also was a part of the Royals 200 yard medley and 400 yard freestyle state championship relay teams.

Jeanne Coy (Westfield), Sr. – Finished third in the 200 yard freestyle at the ‘08 state meet.

Kait Flederbach (Westfield), Jr. – Finished seventh in the 50 yard freestyle and sixth in 100 yard freestyle at the 2008 state meet while swimming for Western High School.

Erin Kelley (Hamilton Southeastern), Sr. – Finished sixth in the 200 yard freestyle and 14th in the 100 yard freestyle at last season’s state meet.

Emmie Ryan (Avon), So. – Finished third in the 500 yard freestyle and 13th in the 200 yard freestyle at the 2008 state championships.

Paige Copeland (Hamilton Southeastern), Jr. – Finished 13th in the 50 yard freestyle and 11th in the 100 yard butterfly at the ’08 state meet.

Nora Brolsma (Noblesville), Sr. – Finished 14th in the 50 yard freestyle at last season’s state meet.

Maegan O’Connor (Hamilton Southeastern), Sr. – Finished sixth in the 100 yard butterfly and sixth in the 100 yard backstroke at the 2008 state championships.

Megan Gallagher (McCutcheon), So. – Finished 16th in the 500 yard freestyle at the ’08 state meet.

Aubrey Hertzler (Hamilton Southeastern), Jr. – Finished 8th in the 100 yard backstroke at last season’s state meet.

Meghan Potee (Noblesville), Jr. – Finished 8th in diving at the 2008 state championships.

Gail Susdorf (Fishers), Jr. – Finished tenth in diving at the ’08 state meet.

Christina Beyerl (Hamilton Southeastern), Sr. – Finished 11th in diving at last season’s state meet.

2009 Conference Meet Overview
“I think the HCC Meet will again be one of the two best conference meets in the state. Hamilton Southeastern will be contending for the state championship later in the year, but I expect Zionsville to push them at the HCC meet. Beyond those two, every school has state meet caliber athletes across a wide range of events, which makes the meet very competitive from top to bottom.” – Brownsburg coach Josh Saylor

The HCC continues to grow into one of the great swimming and diving conferences in our state. Zionsville, Lafayette Jeff, and Fishers made the path to the championship very difficult for HSE last year and should do so again this year. In addition, Noblesville is strong again and is always a tough opponent.” – Hamilton Southeastern coach Andy Pedersen

The HCC meet is always an exciting meet because of the level of competition. There are at least six of the teams ranked in the top 20, and for younger swimmers to see these competitors can be the chance of a season or a lifetime.  Hamilton Southeastern has always been the strong favorite, but Fishers has grown in strength and numbers. – Harrison coach Kristen Trella

GBB: J&C Hoops Classic; Lafayette Jeff rolls to victory over Harrison

By Eric Eaton
Hoosier Crossroads Conference Content Coordinator

LAFAYETTE – In an effort to slow down Lafayette Jefferson’s up-tempo offense, first-year Harrison coach Clay Hanna employed a 3-2 zone defense against the Bronchos in its opening round contest of the fourth-annual J&C Hoops Classic from McCutcheon High School on Nov. 18.

The strategy didn’t work, as Lafayette Jeff torched the Raiders zone defense by connecting on 13-three pointers during an 87-44 romp over Harrison.

Charae Richardson and Breanna Calloway did most of the Bronchos damage from behind the arc, combining to make a total of nine three-pointers.

The senior Richardson, who hit four three’s against Harrison, led the Bronchos in scoring with 32 points. Calloway, a sophomore, came off the bench to contribute five three-pointers and 23 points in the blowout victory.

The game was never in doubt, as Lafayette Jefferson raced out to a 22-3 first quarter advantage. The Bronchos then increased their lead in each subsequent quarter, outscoring their Tippecanoe County and Hoosier Crossroads Conference rivals by margins of five points, eight points, and eleven points during the final three periods.

With the win, the Bronchos (1-1) earned a spot in Friday’s J&C Hoops Classic semifinals where they will take on West Lafayette at 7:30 P.M., a 62-58 winner over Lafayette Central Catholic. Lafayette Jeff has never played for the championship of the eight team event which is contested annually in Tippecanoe County the week before Thanksgiving.

Harrison (0-2) will play in the consolation bracket of the tournament on Thursday, Nov. 20 at 7:30 P.M against Central Catholic.  Seniors Ashley Courtney and Jacklyn Williams each contributed 11 points apiece to lead the Raiders in scoring against the Bronchos.

Girls Basketball: HCC Conference Preview

By Eric Eaton
Hoosier Crossroads Conference Content Coordinator

Last season the Fishers Tigers accomplished quite a feat by going undefeated (9-0) in the Hoosier Crossroads Conference to capture the conference crown in just their second season as a program.

This season, Fishers once again figures to be at or near the conference standings with the return of three starters, including 5’3” point guard Karli Harris who averaged 13.3 points and 5.7 steals per game last season.

If Fishers doesn’t repeat as conference champion this season then either Hamilton Southeastern or Lafayette Jefferson look to be the top two contenders to dethrone the Tigers.

HSE, which went 8-1 in the league last season, returns two all all-conference performers from last season in Courtney Osborn and Paige, as the Royals hope to take back the conference title which they have won in five of the last six seasons.

Lafayette Jefferson, which finished in a three-way tie for third-place in the conference standings last season at 6-3, also returns two all-conference performers from last season in the Richardson cousins, Brandi and Charae.

Last season, Brandi and Charae both ranked in the top-3 in the conference in scoring, each averaging more than 16 points a game.

On a statewide level, the conference will look to improve upon its post-season results from a year, when all 10 league members failed to make it out of the sectional round of competition.

On the coaching front, Harrison, Noblesville, and Westfield each begin the season with new coaches.

Clay Hanna begins what looks to be a major rebuilding process at Harrison, as the Raiders have won a total of 11 games the last three years.

At Noblesville, Donna Keck comes over from Greenfield-Central to lead a Millers squad that went 7-15 last season.

And at Westfield, Shane Sumpter replaces Andy Tebbe as coach of the Shamrocks. Sumpter, who comes over from Anderson, hopes to build upon Tebbe’s success, as Westfield has won at least 12 games in three straight seasons.

Here’s a capsule look at all 10 conference teams (Note: teams are listed in the order they finished in last year’s conference standings)

Conference Overview

“We have a very competitive conference that gets more competitive each year.  I would think that Fishers and HSE have to be the favorites with the likes of Karli Harris of Fishers and Courtney Osborn and Paige Smith of HSE.  What I like about our conference are the incredible coaches.  We have some of the finest minds in basketball in our conference.  Our games are like chess matches.  It is fun to be a coach in this conference.” – Lafayette Jefferson coach Jan Conner

“The HCC is one of the top 5 girls’ basketball conferences in the state. HSE, Fishers and Lafayette Jeff are truly great programs. The conference is full of proven head coaches. If you want to be at the top, it takes total commitment from the community, school, players, coaches and families.” – Zionsville coach Brad Montgomery
